Looks like we have a third client. She is a candy maker and wants us to do a site for her. She had a friend start it off for her, but he can’t deliver fast enough and his skills are rudimentary. I told her eventually she would outgrow our web skills, too. But our strength is in putting together a marketing plan for her that would include a basic website.

I’m kind of hype because we would get to experiment with the project planning side of a commercial website. I hope that we can deliver without taking to much time from our other clients. It feels good to just say that.

This client wants to barter some of our services. I think we will make some kind of arrangement but we are going to have to stay on top of the accounting. We need the money more than we need any other services right now.

We work on our sales package next week. I’m purchasing our hosting services tonight and then we will post our website and clean it up before we mail out any information.

Our second client has to put together his product list for the brochure. My partner is working hard on that. I’m working on preparations for the website. We have to look at a lot of different hosting options. Right now price is our main concern.

I’m reading up on XML. I think that is the future for electronic documentation. I think between the two of us we can come up with a pretty good system to start handling some of the documents we’ll be working on.

I’m nervous about the conferences coming up. We have to have our site online before we go. I’m not sure that’s going to happen. I’m afraid we may not appear ready for the government people or the big high-tech companies. We can do the work. I’m just not sure how we can convince them of it. I’m going to write my cousin again and try to get some input from her. She hasn’t responded to my emails yet. I’ll call her at work next week.

We have to get a Reseller’s permit. That’s a form and a half. But we need it to register for LA County contracts. I’m going to try to get it together today.

We did a marketing plan presentation for a new client. He was impressed and is signing on. That’s a relief. My partner is very hyped up, after we spent the whole day putting together a sample brochure. It’s a great brochure and we get to pocket a check afterward. That’s good. Now we have to put together the rest of the campaign, flyers, press releases, website.

I think we should use XML for the website, so that we can update it easier. That would mean we have to learn XML first. I’m using the SAMS Learn XML In 21 Days. We’ll see about that. So far I’ve polished off the first chapter. Not an easy read. I want to see if I can really learn this in 21 days or less.

Meantime we have to put together our own sales package for the conferences we’ll be attending next month. We have to be ready to make a good impression.

The news report tonight said that there was a strange smell floating around LA. My neighbor said they let her school out early because they thought it was a gas leak. The smell seems to be migrating through LA. We closed our windows, as if it’s going to make a difference. The question that’s floating around with the cloud is:
“Is this a terrorist attack of some kind?”

That would be foul. How do you protect yourself from a gas that can stay airborne all day. That floats over an entire county. Or are they releasing it in multiple locations? Then why would they unleash it in South Central LA?

So I got my first client. My aunt/godmother needed stationary for her community group. I recreated one of her old letterheads, labels and memo sheets. It felt good to deliver them to her. It’s a long way from where we need to be, but it’s a start.

I’m reading Big Bucks by Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles. Ken Blanchard is the One Minute Manager guru. In most of his books he talks about giving back, doing for others, win/ win, blah, blah, blah…

Despite all of that, he gives some righteous advice on managing people and creating a humane and happy life while achieving success. I’ve taken most of his other advice, so now I’ve decided to take the rest. Mr. Bush, our president du jour, has opened the doors to Americans to get involved with civil service. Check out: Citizen Corps. They have lots programs in lots of areas for people to get involved. Since I’m self-employed now, I want to spend some time volunteering. It feels right, like something I can enjoy doing. I’ll keep you updated.

Other than that, we have three government contracting conferences to go to in March so we are working hard to put together a sales package. I’m looking forward to it.
